In keeping with the theme of the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer for 2026, “The Golden Twenties,” we were commissioned by pad that uses audio commentary and video projections to bring the Mainz of the 1920s to life and contrast it with the present day. Not only facts about the history of the Weimar era, but above all individual, perhaps otherwise hidden stories, personal fates, poetry, music, art, and culture of that time become part of a comprehensive audiovisual experience.
During a traditional city walk, participants listen to facts and stories about Mainz in the 1920s through headphones. Video projections on buildings in Mainz complement this experience.
Ausgangspunkt für das Projekt waren folgende Fragestellungen:
What exactly was “golden” about the Golden Twenties? How did the people of Mainz experience the political and cultural upheaval? What aspects of the cultural renaissance reached the “provinces”? What events were on people’s minds back then? Can we draw lessons from that era for our present, and if so, what are they? Are we currently in a similar phase of political and cultural upheaval? Does history repeat itself over and over, and to what extent can we influence it?

Each event begins at 8:00 p.m. with a social gathering over drinks; the tour starts at 8:30 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m.
